Janus, the two-faced Roman god, represents new beginnings and transitions. His two heads metaphorically represent him peering into the future and past while he is often associated with bridges, doorways and time. Romans honored Janus in the month of January as they transitioned into a new year. I was reminded by a friend during the hype of 12/21/12 and the end of the Mayan calendar as well as the I Ching; that perhaps it wasn't the end of time but rather the end of an era. Prolifically speaking the passing of December 21, 2012 could in fact be a transition in our minds rather than a grand physical destiny or end. Perhaps we are welcoming the era of humanity. We could all use a little more compassion whether it be to our sweethearts, friends, or our interactions with complete strangers.
The first of my 52 forges is a giveaway. It is a 24kt vermeil necklace with a moss agate bezel set pendant. Moss agate is said to strengthen one's bond with nature while promoting understanding and communication. Continuing with the rebirth theme of this post, moss agate is believed to help those who have long-established habits or dependencies to be free of them. So to win my 1/52 forge simply comment on this post telling us what you are up to in 2013 and leave your email. Feel free to share an image of the necklace on instagram or twitter or pinterest with #52forge.
Hugs,
Maggie

What a lovely giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI've been quite busy reading, renewing and relishing in the new year. I really did feel something change with the new year (although maybe with all the Christmas rushing and noise, I only became aware of it then) and a whole new energy has infused my actions. I'm riding the wave, and really enjoying it so far.
melissa.titze(at)gmail.com
transcending ease is the best feeling. i am one who worries and stresses about certain spheres of my life but now that i have taken steps to change them for the better i feel at ease already!!
DeleteIn 2013 I'm working on being more positive and being a better me, physically and mentally. I know that by doing that it will impact the people around me in a positive way too. :)
ReplyDeleteso true. i somewhat despise goals that are geared toward losing weight and such vanities. i guess i ultimately think that creating to do lists for goals is not healthy and can't bring satisfaction because one is always beating themselves up if it isn't fulfilled. focus on the positive and everything comes up roses!
DeleteAwesome project! That necklace is a beautiful start to 52 weeks of handcraft.
ReplyDeleteI find myself in a transitional period myself, but it isn't one where I am solely adopting brand new habits, hobbies, etc. Rather, I am returning to some lost or neglected ones, such as running (Austin 2013 Half-Marathon - here I come!) and journaling, while also pursuing new projects that will hopefully lead me to having a better understanding of myself. I hope to be less shy, more sure of my voice, and while maintaining a sense of kindness and obligation to do good for the plants, animals, and people that share this world with me.
whiskeythighs(at)gmail.com
i am with you. i neglected my hobbies last year and it made me feel horrible. progress is gratifying and helps maintain those new habits. wish i could do a half-marathon...good luck!
DeleteI just started a meditation practice today and am furthering my yoga practice this year. I hope to have a new bee hive in the spring and garden as well. Beyond that it open!!
ReplyDeleteHoopataka at gmail dot com
i love when yearly goals are geared towards meditation and thought. having that as a starting point can open the door to everything else falling into place. i wish could have a bee hive but i am severely scared of bees!
DeleteNice! What a great way to start off the year. I wish I had a sweet 52 week project to work on. Hopefully by this time next year I'll have one thought up.
ReplyDeleteThis year I'm working on really getting into running and being a healthier me. I need to re-evaluate my food choices and make sure that I don't forget to be physically active.
you can start at 52 project now. i can't commit to doing one thing so i've left the door open to a few. since you are really into health it could be a 52fit, where you do one weekly thing geared toward health...a healthy meal or activity!?!?!
DeleteHello! 2013 is, for me, a year to reset and rebuild after a rather difficult 2012. I'll be taking care of myself better, and working on the things I love: indigo dyeing and textile designing, crafting my goods, reading more, gardening, hiking with my husband and dog, and building a stronger positive outlook.
ReplyDeletesquidwhaledesigns@gmail.com
actually doing things always makes a better and more positive me. when i sit and watch a movie i feel like a bum. but indigo!! awesome, i thought about growing some but i just see the dogs ripping them up...what kind of textile design are you doing?
DeleteI am currently learning how to manage the indigo. It's unlike any dye I've ever worked with before because it's a live fermentation, so it has an attitude and life-cycle. I'm working on some stamps to do some handprinting over top, and I do some silk screening too, then I sew things up into zip pouches, dopp kits, bandanas, and more. I have plans for larger totes and luxury scarves.
Deletewww.squidwhaledesigns.etsy.com
I'm working on the phrase 'get up and go'. Last year was spent lazily putting things off for 'tomorrow'. Looking back, I hardly even touched those things I put off. I spent far too much time flopping about in bed and endlessly lurking the internet. This year I will 'get up and go' and start living my days to the fullest!
ReplyDeleteerincash@gmail.com
oh man, who doesn't struggle with motivation. that's why i think a weekly project is a great starting point. you should create one for your self. i started my first project and then became little addicted to making things...started with the necklace then a scarf than another scarf. once that ball is rolling it don't stop!
DeleteI working on confidence this year...I want to be confident at my job, in my relationships, and my daily life by moving outside the box sort of speak!
ReplyDeleteThis pendant is absolutely beautiful!
Please count me in!
Ergo - Blog
confidence is something i struggle with a lot. insecurity is scarred on my skin, but i find that if i meet that insecurity with positivity all that comes back to me is positive.
Deletei totally feel you on the job front, i have a day job doing custom jewelry work, running the social media and ecommerce for a business but no having control of my own time and being at the will of my boss crushes my confidence. one of my goals is to possibly find a job that is engaging and holds more interest to me but it is hard for me not to feel stuck after 3 years at the same job....wow that was long sorry to trail on like that!
2013 is definitely a refreshing new year. I feel the beckon of empty journals, of brand new pens, of things I've always wanted to learn.
ReplyDeletethingstheymade@gmail.com
journaling is a great addition and habit to adopt. good selfie time for sure. sadly i am horrible at it. i was given a journal as a kid but only the first few pages saw use. perhaps i would be a better writer if i had stuck it out
DeleteLove this giveaway. I'll be working on gutting our house and renovating room by room. Doing this with 2 small kiddos underfoot is going to be quite interesting.
ReplyDeletethat is huge. i recently moved houses, luckily this one did not need repair but anything that puts my space and home in disarray can have the power to put me in constant stress...stay grounded and it will surely be a good experience
DeleteGoodness, I left out my email.
ReplyDeleteStephgentry@gmail.com
I want this year to be the year I let go of the old and welcome the new. That be either material or emotional. I can't move forward if I'm always looking back. Although it is nice to reflect on your past its been important for me to learn from it and leave it there! I want to grow as friend, daughter, sister, lover, mom and most important I want the relationship with myself to be the best EVER!
ReplyDeletexendlessvacationx@hotmail.com
hear, hear...agreed in totality. every once in awhile i do a 365 purge. i find 365 things that are taking up space in my home and heart...then it is given to charity or sold or trashed if is beyond repair or use. old books, music, clothes, notes. i really believe that once your life is simplified of excess material there is room for emotional repair.
DeleteThank you! This is such a great idea. I am going to start on it tonight. I mean business over here. I also forgot to mention earlier the necklace is beautiful. ;)
DeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeletein 2013 I will be finishing my Bachelors degree and will be taking loads of time to reflect and narrow in on the topics that I am most interested in studying for my Master's degree!
And saving money-to pay for said Master's. Lots of it.
Brittany
barkhouse-b at hotmail.com
i did my bachelors degree in two years, after that i was DONE with school or so i thought. i am enrolled in 3 classes for this spring, a little scared about navigating a campus since i haven't been in school for 6 years. good luck to you!
DeleteBeautiful necklace! This year I'll be learning to sew.
ReplyDeleteelizabeth.kantner@gmail.com
sewing, what a worthy skill. i wish i was better at it. you shall have to post images of your creations! or blog you process and skill progression
DeleteI'm moving, starting a new position at work, and starting my very first 52week project. A story (or new idea/outline) a week. Hoping to end up with some gems. Oh, and hopefully wearing lots of lovely jewelry. :)
ReplyDeletehttps://surfacearea.jux.com/thestories/
Em
nice, i am guessing you are a writer. i wish i could conjure up creative stories, but the only time that happens is when i am sleeping. happy new year!
Deletegorgeoooous. i decided to do something like 52 forge too. except i wasn't smart enough to think of the word forge so i'm just calling it 52 weeks of creativity whatever. that and trying to get my driver's license is what i'm up to this year. and maybe stop smoking. and save the world or something or maybe just not step on bugs. xo
ReplyDelete52 ahimsa/assemble..thesaurus is my best friend! have you tried the electronic cigarettes i hear they help! good luck
DeleteIt's going to be end of mine day, except before ending I am reading this impressive piece of writing to improve my knowledge.
ReplyDeleteHere is my web site: instagram page url

Such a beautiful necklace! I'm starting the year by cleaning out my apartment, focusing especially on getting my workspace organized. I really want to create a workspace (and a living environment in general) that feels nurturing and comfortable, so that's my focus for the first month of 2013. Love the goal you've set with 52 Forge! Wishing you lots of luck :)
ReplyDeleteerindollar {at} gmail {dot} com
i hear you. i can't possible decompress or feel at peace unless i have an organized workspace or living space for that matter. i am going to work on simplifying too
DeleteMy plans for 2013 include saving money and improving my credit some so that I can buy a new house! I bought my first home in 2004 thinking I'd only be in it for a few years but somehow got a little stuck. My new place with have a yard big and secluded enough to have chickens and room enough for an office!
ReplyDeletegorms.tiffini@gmail.com
ahhhh grown-up things. i have no credit cards so i have no credit score, which is a double edged sword...no debt but no ability to buy house! i hope you find you dream home, good luck
Delete2012 was a big year of change for me. I finished a degree, uprooted myself to the other side of the country, and started another degree. 2013 is going to be all about personal fulfillment and growth. I'll start writing my thesis, travel to exciting places abroad and domestically, meet some internet people in real life. I'm gonna craft hard, cook harder, and (hopefully) be happier.
ReplyDeleteheschmid(at)ualberta(dot)ca
take me with you. where are you planning on going? tell me please!! i am hoping to make it to iceland this year plus beca and i might go to NYC in June.
DeleteIn August 2012 I took a big step by moving away from home (Minnesota) for the first time to the mountains of Montana. It's already been an incredible journey and I'm looking forward to what 2013 has to offer. This pendant really speaks to me; the Moss Agate is Montana's state gemstone. Minnesota's state gem is the Lake Superior Agate, a beautiful stone which I have spent many hours beach combing for on the north shore. I plan to spend the new year tracking wolves in Yellowstone, charting the constellations, painting, singing, photographing everything, learning to play the violin, practicing archery, and rockhounding, of course!
ReplyDeletesarahlahayemann@gmail.com
you are awesome... beca practices archery and i played the violin, of course here we call it a fiddle. i lived in big fork.
DeleteThank you! You are awesome as well, really really awesome! I almost headed East for Tennessee mountains, and the old time music. Someday!
Deletei am envious of your talent!
ReplyDeletei am hoping that 2013 will be my year after having an awful 2011 and a passable 2013. to make my year the best ever i've made a list of 100 things to do/accomplish in the new year. little things like lose some weight i gained after being sick so i can have my passport updated. i've broken everything down into easy to complete steps, like to save 2000$ this year i need to put away at least 166$ dollars a month. i'm going to be volunteering as a domestic violence shelter and hopefully i can make a difference there, because i know what it's like to escape. i'm working hard to get my blog up and runnin g and just purchased my domain name today! i'm even training for a 5k (run for your lives) in august. basically i just want to live my life to the fullest because the last 2 years have been a drag to pull myself up and out of the muck. i can't wait to accomplish all of my goals this year!
your pendant is beautiful! i want to learn to do something with jewelry.
shellasaurusrex at gmail.com
i am glad to hear you are staying positive. 2008-2009 were my horrible years...it took time to recover and accept the fated changes in my life but i feel like i have more understanding and direction for myself. i hope you accomplish everything you want this year!
Deletei love your idea to still have a plan and goals but not to limit yourself or put pressure on your creative mind! my new husband and i are planning for minimalism this 2013. what keep and cultivate what we absolutely need and what we don't we let go, be the subject matter in our minds or physically. LOVE it so far-only one week in and fifty-one to go.
ReplyDeletecheers to 2013!
heids89@gmail.com
sometimes i plan on simplifying and purging stuff in my life but often times it is to make room for other stuff i want. i want to plan a purge this year that doesn't involve a splurge afterward. married life presents another issue when combining the stuff... good luck.
DeleteMe and my honey of 5 years are buying a house this year. We are excited to make something our own. The trick is finding THE ONE in the neighbirhood, price, floor plan, etc we want. No big deal, right?! Haha!
ReplyDeleteHope 2013 is good to you!
i just moved into my dream home... it is smaller than i wanted but definitely manageable. Eric (my husband) is a musician so the extra room has become his music den. i hope to share images on the blog of the house once we get it all set up! it is stressful trying to find a home so stay relaxed...happy 2013
Delete2013 is all about trying to harmonize my life. Trying to be more grounded and present.
ReplyDeletemeganet[at]shaw[dot]ca
M.
you can do it. i am not the queen of harmony in fact often times i am stretched thin. i am going to struggle with that this year i am sure since i have decided to take classes and work full-time and start a side business with beca!
DeleteHi Maggie,
ReplyDeleteI found your blog through The lovely ladies of squid whale design and I'm really enjoying it. 2013 will be a very busy year for me as I launch the new old tobacco proof website and a new line of bags. I'm mostly excited for more time with my kids this year. My daughter, also named Maggie would cherish this necklace always.
I hope you have a wonderful new year and I'm excited to follow your work on this blog.
Warm regards
Jeremy
oh man....i am an accessories girl and bags are an addiction of mine, please show me these bags!! i am working toward self-employment this year with crafting...i hope your production goes well!
DeleteYikes! I almost forgot. You can email me at oldtobacco@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteOoh, I love this...I love having some sort of stone on at all times and I'd love this to be one! kristenrog@gmail.com :) I'm working on not apologizing for every little thing right, even when someone bumps into me and I'm like "oh, I'm so sorry!"
ReplyDeletei have an appeasing nature too, it is okay to be courteous but not a doormat...sometimes my mind can't create that barrier. i think that this is a great ideal to work on because i, like most people, assume i am to blame if something goes wrong or at least this might be a female thing, thoughts?
DeleteWhat am I up to in 2013? The real question is "what am I NOT up to?" I'm working on growing my vintage business and my blog, minimalizing my life, traveling as much as I can, and (cue scary music) exercising for 30 minutes a day!
ReplyDeleteThis necklace is beautiful, and I have my fingers crossed hard! Thanks, ladies. :)
awildtonic@gmail.com
sounds like loads of fun, i must admit i checked out your vintage store on etsy and i'm already dreaming about a few pieces! i hope all your busy pays off. i can say that after about 5 sessions of working out i get a little addicted to it. though i have not medically diagnosed with restless leg syndrome (RLS) after watching the infomercials on it, i believe i suffer from RLS mostly because i can't sit through movies or TV shows at all. perhaps this is really ADD. anyway, exercising helps me sleep better at night and i've taken notice that my legs are less restless. hooray for 2013!
Deletethat is such a great 52 week challenge, i can't wait to see what else you make. my goal this year is to be kinder to myself.

This year, my goal is to quit being so afraid. I sometimes let fear and anxiety get the best of me, and I want to put an end to those ways of thinking. Happiest of new years to you.
ReplyDeletei have bouts of anxiety and panic when i conjure images of how i want my life to be and how in reality it doesn't resemble those images. it took some time to realize that what brought on those moments of panic... it was me constantly living in the future. be here now. i had a great experience doing just that a few years a go when a friend of mine popped by my house and said he was going on a drive in the country and that i should accompany him. i did and we ended up at a skydiving spot and took advantage of it. i did something i never thought i would by be simply being in the present!
DeleteThat is just what I'm doing! I flip-flop between the future and the past. I wrote this to myself today: This year, I’m just going to do the best that I can. My best is going to be good enough--it *is* good enough.
DeleteAnd by saying "That is just what I'm doing!" I mean I'm living in someplace other than the present. Thanks for the advice!

OH wow so lovely. This year I choose an overall theme of "Confidence." I felt like this year I should take a step back from pursing life long goals, and spend more time focusing on myself - exploring new interests, standing firm in my beliefs and self confidence. :D
ReplyDelete- Stef
i am a yo-yo when it comes to confidence. one day i am proud of myself (what i've done, where i've worked, places i've lived) then i see where i am now and it stings a little. like most i lost a lot when the economy fell and i moved to TN from NYC, i don't necessarily have my dream job but i have a job. the only thing that makes me feel like i am moving forward is pursuing interests that aid in my creative growth so i think you are doing the right thing! good luck
DeleteNEat! This year I moved to Seattle and got into nursing school. Gonna be a lot of change and a lot of work, but I welcome the challenge! It would be great to have some extra help ditching those old habits during this time of rebirth!
ReplyDelete-Sarah
feisty2222@yahoo.com
starting over in a new city is a great way to pursue that identity that you want. i left a lot of bad habits stay in NYC when I moved to tennessee. i almost went to school at UPS because Seattle seemed like it spoke to my soul, i am weird and love dreary days. i hope school is a breeze!
Delete2013 is all about creativity, nature, and fun. My semester is full of calligraphy, bookbinding, meditation, yoga, and leisure studies. I've spent so many years working up my academic portfolio, and now is the time for some creativity. I am beyond excited!! Also, I'm getting married in October, and I'm having a blast planning that! My resolutions are completely for me and my soul! I'm trying to spend more time outdoors with my pups, creating, and painting. I'm also vowing to buy vintage, handmade, and local whenever I can, even when it's not convenient. I love my little community in Iowa City, and I want to do everything I can to keep it so tight knit and beautiful. I hope your year brings you so much joy and happiness!!!

hey, i know you...pinterest friend. i am so glad you found me here! it is a pleasure hearing your endeavors for 2013, inner work, supporting local and handcrafted businesses, being involved in cultivating experiences instead of staying dormant. that is all stuff i get behind. i haven't been to iowa city before, perhaps i have passed through while touring but now i am interested in seeing your city. i hope wedding planning stays fun...i got married on dec 29th it was pretty great because i didn't stress about it!
DeleteIn a less than two weeks, I'm headed back to a second semester of school. After a bit of a rough start, I'm developing a plan for getting back on a track that I've never really been on. I look forward to earlier mornings and less time wasted. More time reading textbooks that I need to understand and more time reading books that I yearn to appreciate. Regretfully, a dorm room leaves little space for my sewing machine, but opportunities are still plenty for new things to be learned and creativity to be expressed. Above all, I hope to retain who I am despite the chaos and clutter of it all. Wishing you all the best in your new year!

I think I will go to grad school? Hopefully. Fingers crossed.

I'm also not setting goals this year, and just want to focus on settling into myself and my life as it is, feeling grounded. I'm working through degree courses while working in literacy education & freelancing as a video artist so sometimes I feel a bit overwhelmed or unfocused. I'm planning on relaxing into it all more as stressing & writing ridiculous lists hasn't helped.
ReplyDeleteHappy new year!

I have yet to set goals this year...I am still trying to figure out a couple of things first. However, I think that taking time to relax will be a good thing. :)

Maggie, I love your voice. You are so refreshing and this post just spoke TO ME. I believe highly in the passing into the Age of Aquarius, which I felt was really what 12/21/12 was all about! In 2013, I want a Glitter Filled year. Meaning happiness, fanciness, giddiness. Relaxation, creativity, empowerment. Make-up, girly things, spreading joy. It's all part of Glittery-ness in my opinion! I also want to Accomplish everything... Fighting my SSDI denial, finding a new psychiatrist, working on my blog... Pushing myself, and than taking care of myself after the grand push. Taking care of my little family in every way!!!

I think each day can be the dawn of a new era and I hope that be it the "end of the world" or the beginning of a new year, self-reflection sparked in the hearts of people. I think it would be a wonderful era if we all began to recognize our own humanness and offer grace to the humanness of others.
ReplyDeleteI have not been one for new years "resolution" per se, however I do choose a word for the new year. It is a trait which I hope to add more of to my own character/life. This year, 2013, is discipline. There is no defined goal. But if I end this year even the slightest bit more disciplined than before, I will have succeeded.
One of my many philosophies on life is that we can do everything we want to in life, just not all at the same time and there are SO many things I want to do. These things vary from walking my dog and practicing the piano everyday, to making my own clothes and making food for people that they literally can not stop eating (no MSG involved). If I look at my life and ask myself why I am not in-route to these thing, the answer is quite simply discipline. I am not disciplined enough to use my limited free time to the often initially disappointing/daunting practice it takes to get better at these things. That is...until recently.
It's funny how putting a goal, any goal, in front of ourselves to work towards is sometimes all it takes.
I hope you have the best of success and an adventurous time with your 52 Forge!! It seems to be off to a beautiful start!
2013 is my last year of undergraduate at Texas Sate, then I'll be off to graduate school somewhere new. It should be an amazing year with multiple changes that I cannot wait for. stejill(at)gmail(dot)com

ReplyDeleteI hope to be more "in" the moment. Stop wasting time that i do have doing wasteful things ex: spending too much time on netflix, or drinking, etc..
ReplyDeleteUsually one to shy away from resolutions - mostly because I worship at the altar of unexpected change - I've set quite a few goals for myself this year. I made it to 40, despite my body's mistakes, mutations and unintentional left turns into malady. All while single parenting & finishing up an honors degree in Comparative Lit by Spring 2013(thesis: black girls, adolescence and magic in Gulf Coast narratives). True to the aforementioned altar, I have just taken on an internship with a funeral director who focuses on natural and environmentally sound burials & have also signed on to be trained as a death midwife.I will delve deeper into my study of folk method herbalism, have more of my poems published and continue to feed my bibliomania. Aaaaaand I'm also getting my driver's license for the first time, both for my future job and in order to have the ability to run into the wild, sit quiet & recuperate.
