A Surprise Lunch

I was able to get off work early today and after picking out everything at Whole Foods to surprise Doug with a little lunch date, I realized that I didn't have my wallet. I drove home, got my wallet and there went the surprise...but I ran to Von's right down the street and got everything I had in my basket at WF {same brands, same exact items, but added coffee and creamer, and it cost almost half the cost...hmmm...think on that.} So, I got to make my surprise lunch, but it wasn't so much of a surprise, and was a little later than expected.

I made french bread pizza with baby spinach/arugula, chicken apple sausage, tomatoes from our garden and goat brie. It blew my mind. Oh, and Doug really liked it too! ;)
It seriously couldn't have been a better lunch. Now, back to sewing sunglasses bags and packing up orders! Yesterday was an all time high for our shop and we couldn't be more thrilled! Now to get caught up!!

A Video about Durability

We made a video today about the durability of our sunglasses and we are excited to share it with you.
We get our frames from a wholesaler, to keep consistence and affordability. Sometimes, we get a frame that has a defect and the frames will crack after a few uses. This has happened 2 times out of the 80 pairs we have made, but if it does happen, we will make you a new pair, no questions asked, but after watching this video, we hope you can see how durable the frames are!

We still, of course, suggest keeping them in a hard case when not in use, and please don't throw them against your neighbors garage door! They'll just last longer!

Strawberry Preserve

Summertime in this house is all about fresh fruit and berries, and making stuff while listening to good music and drinking juice! This morning, I noticed that I had a ridiculous amount of strawberries aching to be used, so I made jam.
Making jam is the easiest thing to do ever. Lots of berries or fruit of your choice, and enough sugar to make it thicken up. You can adjust the amount as you cook the jam. Cook it until it is thick and bubbly. Use a sterilized jar so mold or other yucky stuff doesn't get caught inside the jar.
Let your jam cool a bit before putting it in the jar. You don't want any broken glass. And don't put it in the refrigerator right away, let it cool on the counter and make you house smell awesome. Once it's rum temp, you can put it in the freezer or fridge. Or just enjoy it on an English muffin like we did!

You won't be disappointing, and it's way cheaper than buying your own jam at the store. I'll share my grandpas recipe for apple butter later this week!

Rainbow Cake

Sometimes, even when your day is fine, you really just need a rainbow cake to make it that much better! I added a 6 layer rainbow cake to the menu at work today!
It was delicious!

Cork

Today was a busy day at work full of experimenting with scone recipes (perfected a buttermilk scone!! I am so used to only making vegan scones, it took a few batches for me to create a recipe that I love!) talking my old boss into giving me his cinnamon roll recipe (why didn't I write it down when I worked there, dummy...) making chocolate covered bacon cupcakes and fighting tooth and nail with melting cream cheese frosting (helllllo summer with no AC!)
And after a serious bike ride home (it was HOT and I am tired!) I walked in the door to these beauties! They are not wood! They are cork! They remind me of leopard print, and are super comfortable! I was so excited, I just wanted to share!
I am going to try to get our house clean while the mister is out skateboarding!

Sew What!

I changed a few things about the sunglasses bags and made about 20 of them over the last couple of days for sunglasses in the shop and I am really happy with how they all turned out. Some are smaller, and some are bigger, but I guess that's just the nature of the beast {ie, I am not super great at sewing, but working on it, and these were ridiculously easy to make!}
Did you notice the pretty anchor sunglasses? They are ebony and ivory with birds eye.

I Heart Cheezburger-Cake

Somethings are not what they seem.
These little treats are triple decker cupcake, two layers of white cake, and one layer of devils food, layered with buttercream, coconut, strawberry filling and fondant. The french fries are sugar cookies tossed with sugar and covered with a strawberry filling.
I got the template for the little picnic box here! I kept wanting to pop one of those french fries in my mouth, but then remembered they were cookies!!

New Sunglasses Pouch

I have been working on pouches to go with our sunglasses so now, if you purchase a pair of sunnies, you get a handmade pouch to keep them in! {We still suggest a hard case when you are out and about, but this little pouch can keep them cozy in your hard case!}

Each bag has been repurposed from vintage dinner linen! How exciting is that?!
What do you think? I don't really like the leather accenting, so will probably nix that and will be using leather laces instead of yarn. I'll show more photos when we get the design down! {now to learn how to screen print!!}

Ham and Cheese

I started craving cheddar pinwheels like crazy when I saw the one's Emma made for her guest post on Leigh-Ann's blog and knew that I had to make them. We've been eating out a lot, and both realized that we didn't want to anymore, so these, of course, were on the top of my list for summer dinners! We like meat, so I changed the recipe a bit and added ham. They can be made like Emma's; vegetarian.

I am going to warn you in advance, they are super addictive.
Yours don't have to be this neat and organized, but I thought it looked cute.
I made two batches and the second came out way more puffy and crispy. I think it's because I used a flat pan and not a cake pan. I don't know why I did that, but I did and that's that. Moral of the story. Use a flat pan.
Yay for cooking/baking at home again! I'm not going to lie, being in a kitchen all day kind of takes the inspiration out of making food at home, but I am trying to get back in the groove. Thanks all you lovely bloggers who post such beautiful food to inspire me!!
